Robert D. Thompson, 78, of Central City, died Friday, Aug. 31, 2007, in his home following a long illness.
Memorial services were at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4, at St. Stephen's Catholic Church in Central City, with Rev. Wayne Droessler officiating. A graveside service was at 10 a.m. Sept. 4, at Mt. Clark Cemetery in Central City, with military rites by Marion American Legion Post No. 298.
Robert was born Oct. 19, 1928 in Decorah, the son of Ben and Emma (Bloom) Thompson. He attended school in rural Decorah. Robert served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. On Jan. 18, 1956, he was united in marriage to Eileen Margaret Friedman in Lamont. He was a member of St. Stephen's Catholic Church, Central City; a lifetime member of the Marion American Legion Post No. 298; and was an operating engineer for Union Local No. 234. Robert had a great love for working on John Deere tractors and he enjoyed the rural setting.
Survivors include his wife, Eileen; his children, Larry Thompson of Turtlepoint, Pa., Susan (Kevin) Steuhm of Idaho Falls, Idaho, Charles (Stephanie) Thompson of Kiowa, Colo. and Douglas Thompson of Bellevue; nine grandchildren and a brother, Jerry Thompson, of Decorah.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Esther Hovden and a brother, Luther Thompson.
