Joyce Cote, age 88, of Decorah, Iowa, died Saturday, April 19, 2014 at Aase Haugen Home in Decorah. She was born in McGregor, Iowa on November 5, 1925, the daughter of Charles and Ruth (Barthell) Hewett.

Joyce Cote attended Monmouth College and the University of California, Berkeley, before graduating from the University of Iowa with degrees in math and home economics education.

On October 24, 1947, she married Paul Denys Cote, and they had four children: Mary Ruth, Paul Denys, Lisa Que and Luke Samuel.

She grew up swimming in Lake Michigan while living in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, and visiting her grandparents on their farm near Waukon during the summers. As an adult, she managed the Waukon swimming pool, substitute taught, and owned and managed the Town Theater in Waukon with her husband. She also lived for a short time in Ventura, California and Omaha, Nebraska.

Joyce belonged to P.E.O., United Methodist Church, Luther College Women’s Club, Girl Scouts, Northeast Iowa Quilter’s Guild, Garden Club, (in which she won many awards for her flower arranging), Bridge Club, Birthday Club, and Phat Club. She earned the Master Gardener’s certification through the Iowa State University Extension Service. She loved spending time at their cabin with her family on the Mississippi River, hiking, and attending aquacise at the pool.

Joyce became a resident of Aase Haugen Home in June of 2009.

Survivor’s include two sons, Paul Cote and his wife Jane of Appleton, Wisconsin; Luke Cote and his wife Sue of Decorah, Iowa; and two daughters, Mary Carman of North Falmouth, Massachusetts; and Lisa Lien and her husband David of Midland, Michigan; and eight grandchildren, Theodore, Jacob and Nathan Cote; Zachary and Mimi Carman; and Benjamin, Samuel, and Molly Lien.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Paul on July 5, 1994, and her brother Charles.

Joyce chose to donate her remains for anatomical study to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. According to her wishes, there will be a private family service at a later date.

Memorials may be sent to the Decorah Municipal Swimming Pool, c/o Decorah Parks and Recreation, 400 Claiborne Drive, Decorah, Iowa 52101.

In Joyce’s memory, enjoy a favorite recipe of hers:
Joyce’s Coffee Cake
2 ½ c. flour
1 t. nutmeg
½ t. salt
¾ c. sugar
1 c. brown sugar
¾ c. vegetable oil
Blend and save 1 c. of the mixture for topping. To remaining add:
2 eggs
1 c. buttermilk with 1 t. baking soda, stirred
1 t. baking powder
Mix well. Pour into greased 9x13 pan. Sprinkle the saved mixture over. Sprinkle with cinnamon and walnuts. Bake at 325 degrees for 35 minutes. When cool, drizzle with powdered sugar frosting.
