Helen Marie Engbretson Gillaspie, 54, of Hiawatha died Sunday at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids after a sudden illness.
She was born Feb. 24, 1932, at Decorah and married David Gillaspie. She was the former owner of the Busy Bee Cafe in Cedar Rapids and in Hiawatha. At the time of her death she was a cook for the HACAP Congregate Meals program.
She was a member of St. Andrew Lutheran Church and was past board member of the Hiawatha Kids League. She was also active in Scouting programs.
She is survived by two daughters, Rebecca Marvel of Farminton, Ill.. and Joyce Thompson of Cedar Rapids; a son, Michael of Cedar Rapids; her mother, Eva Engbretson of Hiawatha; a sister, Margaret Kellison of Hiawatha; and five brothers, Eldon Thompson of Hiawatha, Robert Engbretson of Midway, Richard Engbretson of Brandon, Kenneth Engbretson of Cedar Rapids, and Lyle Engbretson of North Carolina. Three grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services were held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at St. Andrew Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Philip Hougen presiding. Burial was at the Shiloh Cemetery. Teahen Funeral Home of Cedar Rapids is in charge of arrangements. A memorial fund has been established. Contributions may be sent to 312 13th Ave., Hiawatha, Iowa, 52233.
