Elmer Norval Engbretson of 105 Northwood Dr., Hiawatha, Ia., and a former Winneshiek County man, died August 18 at his home at the age of 69. Mr. Engbretson was a farmer most of his life in Madison Township and had been employed by the Decorah Water Department eight years before he retired in 1974 to make his home in Hiawatha.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Aug. 20 at 10:30 a.m. at First Lutheran Church with Pastor Paul Christenson officiating. Burial was in the Lutheran Cemetery with the following serving as pallbearers: Eldon Thompson, Robert Engbretson, Robert Rima, Kenneth Engbretson, Richard Engbretson and Lyle Engbretson.

Honorary pallbearers were Clayton Olson, Palmer Boe, Oscar Hovey, Ernest Johnson and Donald McCormick.

Mrs. Paul Christenson was organist and accompanied the soloist, Mrs. Dale Foltz. The foral committee was comprised of Jan Engbretson, Eleanor Engbretson, Lois Thompson and Sharon Engbretson. Funeral arrangements were made by Steine Funeral Home.

Mr. Engbretson is survived by his wife, the former Eva Erickson; seven sons and daughters, Eldon E. Thompson, Hiawatha, Robert L. Engbretson and Kenneth N. Engbretson, both of Cedar Rapids, Richard M. Engbretson, Hiawatha, Lyle G. Engbretson, Phoenix, Ariz., Helen M. Gillaspie and Margaret I. Kellison, both of Hiawatha.

Other survivors are 23 grandchildren; two brothers, Irvin R. Engbretson, Decorah, Ted M. Engbretson, Rose Creek, Minn. and one sister, Mrs. Bern (Leora) Witzke, Decorah.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Engbret and Minnie Engbretson and two sisters, Gladys and Emma.

Elmer Norval Engbretson was born July 3, 1908 in Bluffton Township. He attended rural schools of Madison Township and Decorah High School. He was married to the former Eva E. Erickson July 26, 1931 in Madison Township.

Mr. Engbretson was a member of First Lutheran Church.
