James J. "Jim" Hogan, 76, of Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y., passed away Jan. 25, 20l4. A memorial reception was from 1-4 p.m. at Maud's Tavern, Hastings, Wednesday, Jan. 29. Donations may be directed to the Riverview Manor Firehouse in Hastings-on-Hudson, to the Ridgewood High School Learning Commons Project for the Ridgewood High School HSA in the name of James Hogan and mailed to Lori Weil at 262 McKinley Place in Ridgewood NJ 07450 or to the charity of your choice.

He was born in Decorah, to James and Coletta Hogan. Jim graduated from Loras College in Dubuque, where as a fierce competitor in football, he was a four-year starter. The UPI sports writer dubbed him "Hurricane" Hogan for his achievements leading the team in scoring, pass receiving, kickoff returns and interceptions during his junior and senior years. He was inducted into the Loras College Athletic Hall of Fame in 2000. Following college Jim taught history and coached at Roger Bacon High School, a football powerhouse in Cincinnati, Ohio. From l963 to l965 Jim served in the Peace Corps in Turkey, where he married Elizabeth Field in Ankara in l965. Following their wedding Jim and Elizabeth traveled throughout the Middle East to Beirut, Jerusalem and Cairo. The couple then settled in New York City where their sons, James and Justin were born. Jim's Peace Corps experience left an imprint which led to him earning a master's degree in political science with a concentration in the Middle East from New York University. He also earned a master's in guidance and education from Xavier University in Cincinnati. In 1968 Jim accepted a position teaching Middle Eastern and Global Studies at Edgemont High School, Scarsdale, where he taught until his retirement in 2000. He also conceived and produced a film titled "Arabs and Jews: The Crisis," which was a finalist in the National Education Film Foundation. Jim was very active in community affairs as well, winning three terms on the Hastings School Board, 1979 to 1988, serving a term as vice-president of the Board. Earlier he was president of the PTSA. For many years Jim was a volunteer with the Riverview Manor Fire Company, Engine 3.

Jim is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; two sons, James (Karen) of Ridgewood, N.J.; Justin (fiancée Carolyn Bevan) of San Francisco, Calif.; four grandchildren: James, John, Matthew and Kate Hogan of Ridgewood, N.J.; and a sister, Shirley Kalish, of Spring Hill, Fla.

He was predeceased by his parents and three sisters: Anne Mannion, Catherine Spicer and Patricia Bolding.
