Growing up Vernon enjoyed being a 4-H member showing livestock at the fair. He worked on a North Dakota wheat farm as a part of the harvesting crew. Vernon served in the US Army from 1950-1952. He was a radio repairman in the Army. Vernon returned home to work the family farm in Canoe Township.
