Robert L. Erickson, 75, of Decorah and formely of Marion, died Tuesday, Nov. 12, 1996, at the Howard County Hospital in Cresco after a long illness.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Nov. 15, at 1 p.m., at the First Lutheran Church in Decorah, with the Revs. Steven M Jacobsen and Harriet Danielson officiating

Visitation will be held at the Fjelstul Funeral Home today, Thursday, Nov. 14, from 4-8 p.m. where there will be a V.F.W. and American Legion memorial service at 7 p.m. Visitation also will be held at the church Friday from noon until 1 p.m.

At the funeral service, organist will be the Rev. Marion Miller. Casketbearers will be Marland Bjerke, Kathryn Erickson, Lester Erickson Jr., Roger Erickson, Tom Erickson and Gerald D. Young. Burial will be at the Lutheran Cemetery in Decorah.

Robert was born Oct. 9, 1921, the son of Olias and Clara M. (Iverson) Erickson, in Canoe Township of Winneshiek County. He graduated from Decorah High School in 1940.

He served in the United States Army Air Corps from Jan. 7,1944 until Feb. 1, 1946. Robert received his "wings" at Luke Field, Ariz., became a 1st Lt., served in the Pacific "Air Offensive Japan," and earned the following decorations: Asiatic Pacific Ribbon with one Bronze Star, OLC to Air Medal, American Theater Ribbon, Dist. Flying Cross, and the Victory Medal.

Robert was married to Betty L. Wiemerslage Jan. 14, 1947, in Eitzen, Minn. They moved to Cedar Rapids and he worked at Rockwell-Collins for 30 years, retiring in 1983. They moved to Decorah in 1995. In February of 1996, Robert became a resident of the Patty Elwood Center in Cresco.

Robert was a member of First Lutheran Church in Decorah. He was a member of the American Legion for 30 years, most recently a member of Bernatz-Symonds American Legion Post No. 163 in Decorah.

Survivors include his wife, Betty of Decorah; one brother, Lester Erickson Sr. of Decorah; four sisters, Olive Frey, Violet Winger, Evelyn Hahn and Alice Tollefson, all of Decorah; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Robert L. Erickson was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Earl and Maurice Erickson.
