Ernest M. Winger, 83, of Decorah, died Friday, Jan. 27, 1995, at Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 30, at 11 a.m.,at First Lutheran Church in Decorah with the Revs. George C. Strum, Steven Jacobsen and Milo E. Lee officiating. Organist was Diane Kvamme. Clark Goltz and Susan Nelson sang "How Great Thou Art" and "Beautiful Savior." The congregation sang "Rock of Ages."

Casket bearers were Roger Erickson, Eric Hahn, Orvin Hotvedt, Michael Natvig, Donald Wendlandt and Steven Winger. Honorary casket bearers were Lester K. Bruvold; Spencer, Darlene and Randy Graves; Milton, Marjorie and Susan Hove; Kenniston, Lillian and Hazel Kirkeby; Howard Smith; Roger R. and Sally Williams; and the Decorah High School Class of 1930.

Burial was in the Lutheran Cemetery. The Fjelstul Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Earnest M. Winger was born May 29, 1911, in Calmar, the son of John Edward and Christine (Nelson) Winger. He was baptized at Washington Prairie Lutheran Church and confirmed at First Lutheran Church. He graduated from Decorah High School in 1930. He was married to Violet Erickson Jan. 10, 1937, at the First Lutheran Church parsonage, by the Rev. T.A. Hoff.

As a young man, he worked at West Side Dairy. Later he owned and operated it. He started farming in 1941 in Glenwood Township, and was active with it until 1965. Since then, he had remained involved in farming all the time up until his death.

Ernest was a member of First Lutheran Church in Decorah. He was a volunteer with the Decorah Fire Department, and then president and active in the Decorah Rural Fire Department. He was a Glenwood Township trustee for many years. He was also a member of the Lutheran Cemetery Board for many years.

Survivors include his wife, Violet of Decorah; a daughter, Donna and Gerald Young of Decorah; two grandchildren, Amy and Greg Lage of Postville and Jon Young of Decorah; and one great granddaughter, Amanda Lage; and two sisters, Grace Chiverton of Cedar Rapids, and Hazel and Cliff Natvig of Decorah.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Lester.
