Sherwin Iverson, known by his friends as Red, passed peacefully Jan. 14, 2014. His wife of 49 years, Shirley, was with him, lovingly caring for him when he passed.

Red was born of good Midwestern stock in Decorah, and was raised on the family farm -- hunting squirrels, exploring caves and keeping his mother busy along with his brothers and sister. Red moved with his family to Fort Collins, Colo., where he attended high school and made lifelong friends, including Mike McMahon. Red joined the Navy in 1960, and learned the skills that led to his lifelong career as an electrician. Returning to Fort Collins Red kindled a romance with the girl next door (literally) -- a beautiful young lady named Shirley Myrah, who he married in May 1965. Red was a dreamer, and a man with plans. As Red and Shirley started their family Red built a farm from the ground up, in Timnath, Colo. The hay fields, huge garden, barns, ditches and open country provided a wonderland for his five children. The farm had amazing views of the mountains, and Red found himself drawn to live in those mountains. In 1984 Red moved his family to Pagosa Springs, Colo., where he created a life he treasured among a very close group of friends. In Pagosa Springs, Red and his family were part of the early growth of Our Savior Lutheran Church. Over the course of 30 years Red provided leadership and found faith, fellowship and peace as part of Our Savior. Everyone seemed to know Red; he was admired, sought out for his expertise and was an important part of the community. He never stayed still for long, building three different houses in Pagosa Springs. In retirement he remained active in church and with his family. In recent years Red's many grandchildren brought him great joy; he loved visiting with them, watching them grow and hearing about their many adventures. Red will be missed, but those left behind are comforted knowing that he is with God standing tall and watching over them smiling.
