May 25, 1866 – May 12, 1956

Rites for Adam Bender, 89, were held Wednesday, May 16, at 2 p.m., at the First Lutheran Church with the Rev. R. A. Ofstedal and the Rev. B. A. Johnson officiating.

Burial was at St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery at Locust with Vernon Bender, Winfield Bender, Virgil Michael, Clyde Quandahl, Allen Holkesvik and Norman Noecker serving as pallbearers. The floral committee consisted of Elaine Bender, Lois Barth, Beverly Bender and Carol Bender. The Steine Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Bender died Saturday, May 12, at his home in Decorah after an illness of two years. He was a retired farmer who lived in Decorah for 14 years.

Surviving are his wife and the following children: Mrs. Frank (Bessie) Barth of Decorah, Virgil Bender, Walter Bender and Mrs. Raymond (Myrtle) Barth, all of Hesper Township.

Ten grandchildren and eight grandchildren also survive along with two sisters, Mrs. Louise Michael of Cresco and Mrs. George Slezer of Charles City.

Bender was born May 25, 1886, the son of Ludvig and Lena Bender, in Hesper Township. He was educated in rural schools of that community.

He and the former Dora E. Brandt were married June 25, 1908, in Decorah. Besides the surviving children, they were the parents of a son Adam, who died in 1940.

Bender was a member of the First Lutheran Church.
