Contributor: Connie Ellis (Not related)Elisabeth M. Cornell "Beth" passed away on March 25, 2011 at HospiceCare Inc. of Madison, Wisconsin. She was born in Ossian, Iowa on June 29, 1907, the only daughter of Welton E. and Bessie (Rathbun) Cornell.
After graduating from the Ossian High School in 1923, she attended Upper Iowa University in Fayette, Iowa for three years. She taught in Marble Rock, Iowa for three years before earning a B.A. degree at the University of Iowa in 1930. The last thirty-seven years of teaching mathematics were in Illinois at Rock Falls for six years; United Township High School in East Moline for 21 years; and New Trier Township High School in Winnetka for 10 years.
Beth spent her summers traveling, attending summer workshops, fellowship studies and earning a Master of Arts degree at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She retired in Middleton, Wisconsin in 1967. She was an 85 year member of the order of Eastern Star. In Middleton, she belonged to Melody Chapter #150 where she held many offices.
Elisabeth Cornell was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, Darrell Cornell of Daly, California; Ralph E. Cornell, Sr. of Middleton, Wisconsin; and Clair C. Cornell of Ossian, Iowa.
She is survived by family members which includes nephews: Ralph (Mary) Cornell of Lodi, Wisconsin, Robert Cornell of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and cousin, Ruthann (Jerry) Martin of Seattle, Washington;grandniece, Kristi Sanfellipo of McKinney, Texas; and grandnephews, Mark Cornell of Jacksonville, Florida, Aaron Erickson of Boca Raton, Florida, and Travis (Karen) Erickson of Waynesville, North Carolina; great-grand-nieces, Caroline and Lauren Sanfellipo, Melody and Elisabeth Erickson; and cousins, Christopher and Anne Elise Martin. She is also survived by cousins in Iowa, California, and Virginia and extended family members in Wisconsin and Florida.
Elisabeth was buried in the family plot of the Bloomfield Township Cemetery in Castalia, Iowa.
