Darlene was born October 22, 1931 in Spring Grove, Minnesota to James and Esther (Nelson) Aasum. She attended the Hesper School in Hesper, Iowa and graduated from the Mabel High School in 1949. On June 30, 1951 she married Paul Baker in Mabel. They lived in the Prosper and Mabel areas until moving into Mabel in 1988 when she began, and continued, working at the Green Lea Manor Nursing Home as a Certified Nursing Assistant. Paul passed away April 14, 2004. She enjoyed playing the organ, reading, cats, and attending her grandsons’ activities.

Darlene passed away Sunday, December 15, 2013 at Tweeten Lutheran Health Care in Spring Grove, Minnesota at the age of 82.

Darlene survived by a daughter Gretchen (Kenneth) Anderson of Spring Grove, Minnesota; a son Darrin of Mabel; two grandsons Kevin and Brian Anderson of Spring Grove; nieces and nephews; and sister-in laws Laura Boice of Decorah, and Lorraine Baker of Waterloo, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Paul; two sisters Jeanette Aasum, and Vivian Housker; and a brother Odell Aasum.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, December 18, 2013 at the Hesper Lutheran Church in Hesper, Iowa with the Reverend Matt Larson officiating. Burial will be in the Hesper Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 – 7 PM at the Mengis Funeral Home in Mabel and one hour prior to services at the church.
