Glen J. Barth passed away Dec. 7, 2013, at Aase Haugen Assisted Living Center in Decorah, after a four-year battle with throat cancer. A celebration of his Life visitation is Thursday, Dec. 12, from 12-2 p.m., with a church service at 2 p.m., at Decorah Lutheran Church. His ashes will be interred at Springwater at a later date.
Glen was born Oct. 15, 1944, the son of Grant and Vivian (Erickson) Barth, on the family farm north of Decorah. Glen and his twin brother were baptized the day of their birth by Pastor Carl Losen of St. John's Lutheran Church in Locust. He was confirmed at Decorah Lutheran Church in 1959. Glen graduated from Decorah High School in 1962. Glen attended Luther College in 1962 and 1963. He entered the Air Force in 1963 and served until 1968, stationed at the Montana Air Base and Offutt Air Base. He was an honor guard for President John F. Kennedy during his visit to Offutt Air Base in Omaha, Neb., in 1963. Glen was selected as Airman of the Year for SAC in 1968. After his Air Force service was completed, Glen attended college in Nebraska. After college, he returned to Decorah and worked for several companies. In 1976, he started working for the State of Iowa. He moved to Dubuque and worked as a supervisor for the State Liquor Store in Dubuque. In 1979, Glen began working for the State of Iowa as a state nursing home auditor, which he did until his retirement in 2005, after 29 years of service with the state. Glen was the treasurer for both Springwater Lutheran Church and Decorah Lutheran Church. He also was the treasurer for the Winneshiek County Historical Society and the Decorah Genealogy Association.
Glen is survived by his sister, Norma (Dale) Lundy, Decorah; three brothers: Daryl (Shelley) Barth, Jacksonville, Fla.; Duane Barth, Lansing; and Terry (Julie Rosel) Barth, Decorah; five nieces: Suzanne (Lyle) Taylor, Spring Valley; Krisanne (Craig) Nelson, Rochester, Minn.; Andrea (John Marko) Barth, Lime Springs; Sara (Brad) Anderson, Sun Prairie, Wis.; Kari (Kurt) Barth Muchow, Minneapolis, Minn.; seven great-nieces and -nephews: Michael, Nicholas and Megan Taylor of Spring Valley, Minn.; Alexis Nelson of Rochester, Minn.; Cameron and Ryan Anderson of Sun Prairie, Wis.; and Payton Muchow of Minneapolis, Minn.; and many cousins.
Glen was preceded in death by his father, Grant J. Barth, Jan. 19, 1999; his mother, Vivian Barth, June 17, 2004; two brothers, Otis Barth, Dec. 25, 1961 and twin brother, Gary Barth, Oct. 27, 2010.
