Leonard Chipera, age 85, of Jackson Junction, IA, died on Sunday, November 17, 2013, at the West Union Good Samaritan Center in West Union, Iowa.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, November 20, 2013, at the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church in Little Turkey, IA, with Rev. Nick March presiding. Burial will be in St. John’s Catholic Cemetery in Fort Atkinson, IA.

Friends may call from 3:00-7:00 p.m., on Tuesday at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, Chekal Chapel in Fort Atkinson, Iowa. There will be a rosary at 4:00 and a scripture service at 5:00 on Tuesday at the funeral home. Friends may also call after 9:30 a.m., at the church on Wednesday morning.

Leonard Joseph Chipera was born on February 22, 1928, the son of Joseph and Katherine (Herold) Chipera, on a farm east of Jackson Junction. Leonard graduated from St. John’s Catholic School in Fort Atkinson, IA. He was united in marriage to Nerissa Espinosa on January 26, 1983 in the Philippines. To this union, two children were born, Allen Joseph and Kristie Lynn. He farmed in Jackson Township and had a herd of Angus beef cattle. Leonard served as president of the Winneshiek County Cattleman Association for two years; was the Mayor of Jackson Junction for eight years; served as councilman of Jackson Junction for thirty two years; was a 4-H member for six years and a 4-H leader for thirty-one years and a member of the Knights of Columbus for fifty seven years. Leonard also was a member of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Little Turkey. Leonard also loved to hunt and fish. Leonard always enjoyed going to his children’s activities. His greatest love was for his family.

Leonard is survived by his wife: Nerissa Chipera, Jackson Junction, IA. Two children: Allen (Elizabeth) Chipera, Walford, IA, and Kristie (friend, Levi Hawk) Chipera, Newton, IA. One sister: Viola Pitzenberger, Jackson Junction, IA. One brother: Paul (Lillian) Chipera, Fort Atkinson, IA, along with many nieces and nephews.

Leonard was preceded in death by his parents: Joseph and Katherine (Herold) Chipera. One sister: Cecillia Chipera Leuenberger in 2011. Brothers-in-law: Eugene Leuenberger in 1990, Rudy Pitzenberger in 2010 and Joey Manicad in 2010. His father and mother-in-law: Miguel and Asuncion Espinosa. One sister-in-law: Mercy Daniel in 2000. One nephew: John Chipera in 2006.
