Elgin Echo, Thur., 23 March 1899. From the Decorah Public Opinion, undated.

The Decorah Public Opinion tells of the drowning of a man in the floods of March 11th. It says Osten Gjermundson Dable and his brother, of Glenwood township, each came to Decorah March 11th with a load of wood. Towards evening they started for home, and all went well until they came to the creek east of Jens Kallevang's, which the rains had swollen until it had become a raging torrent. Mr. Dahle's mother and brother, realizing the danger, had come to the other side of the creek, and warned the boys not to attempt to cross, but Osten thought he could make it, and started, his brother refusing to risk it. Osten had scarcely entered the stream before his horses were swept off their feet, and he was thrown into the stream and drowned. His body was not found until the next morning, and when discovered was lodged in a tree down the creek. One of the horses was drowned, the other succeeding in getting upon a high point of ground, where it stood until morning.

DROWNED IN THE FRESHET.
Osten J. Dahle drives into Trout River while Intoxicated and loses his life.
Last Saturday Osten J. Dahle, a young man about twenty-two years old, residing in Glenwood township, visited Decorah and indulged in too much liquor. When he started for home he was in a badly intoxicated condition, but succeeded in getting within a short distance of his home, safely. A younger brother was also in town and had a separate rig. He was ahead of the older one when they reached Trout river, which was badly swollen by the rain. The mother and brother of the boys saw them coming and went out to caution them about attempting to cross the stream. The younger boy stopped, but Osten drove ahead unheeding, and the torrent carried him and his team down stream. The younger boy jumped from his rig and ran down to a log that is used in crossing the stream, hoping to catch and save his brother. He succeeded in catching him, but Osten could do nothing for himself, and in a last attempt the boy jumped into the stream with the drowning man. It was useless, however, and he finally crawled out upon a cake of ice and saved himself. The brother was carried down some distance further, but the body was not recovered until about daylight the next day, when it was found with one foot tangled in some brush. One of the horses was also drowned. The funeral was held yesterday morning from the home of the boy's mother.
