Shirley Solem, 87, of Pine City, died Thursday night, Sept. 5, 2013, at Golden Living Center in St. Louis Park. Reverend Vicki Vander Vegt officiated funeral services for Shirley Solem at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Pine City.Thomas Caza, Natalie Caza and Glenna Reierson provided music. Casketbearers were Bryan Hawkins, Eric Hawkins, Chris Olson, Matt Olson, Joe Vassar, Tony Vassar, Terry Vassar and Kent Haft. Mike Caza was an honorary casket bearer. Interment was in Pine Grove Cemetery. Arrangements for Shirley Solem were entrusted to the Funeral and Cremation Service of Pine City, Swanson Chapel. funeralandcremationservice.com.

Shirley Lucille Solem was born to Oscar and Genevieve (Manuel) Wilbur March 23, 1926, in Winneshiek County. Shortly after high school graduation she married Harold Solem in the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They lived in various places throughout Iowa and southern Minnesota finally settling in Shakopee, Minn. After retiring, they moved to Pine City to live on Cross Lake. They were married for 49 years and had nine children. Shirley enjoyed fishing with Harold on Cross Lake, cooking, baking, canning, needlework,and going to garage sales. She liked going to the senior center where she played bingo, cards and fellowshipped with her friends. Shirley loved going for rides in the car and often took the long way home. Most importantly, Shirley cherished spending time with her family.

Shirley is survived by her children: Linda Carter of Burnsville, Carol Jones and her husband Robert of Henderson, Nev., Janet Clark and her husband Robert of Rosemount, Barbara Olson and her husband Randy of Prior Lake, Donna Adams and her husband Tom of Hopkins, Wanda Caza and her husband Mike of Grasston, Dennis Solem and his wife Kim of Shakopee, Richard Solem and his wife Debra of Shakopee; 22 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents Oscar and Genevieve Wilbur, husband Harold Solem, daughter Joan Hawkins, grandchildren: Courtney Carter, Tim Caza, Todd Hawkins; sisters Allice Hallisy, Virginia Dinger, Dorothy Wernett; and brother Manford Wilbur.
