Elgin Echo, Thursday, 8 May 1902.

Gunder Hanson, a resident of Decorah, cut his throat with a razor Wednesday afternoon, May 2, and died a half hour later. Mr. Hanson had been sick most of the winter and on this day he was to weak to stand alone. Evidently he must have later become insane. One of his wife's daughters works for the city marshal and the other he sent down town on an errand. After she had gone Hanson rose, knocked his wife down and went upstairs and secured a razor. Coming down, he found his wife in the act of leaving the house and made two slashes at her with the razor, cutting her dress with one of them. Mrs. Hanson cried out for help and her daughter hastened across the street just in time to find her stepfather had cut his throat from ear to ear. Medical aid was summoned at once, but nothing could be done to save the man's life. Mr. Hanson was about 60 years old and had worked at various occupations for a number of years.

CUT HIS THROAT,
Gunder Hanson, Mentally Unbalanced from Diseases, takes His Own Life.
Gunder Hanson, a resident of the 4th ward, cut his throat with a razor yesterday afternoon and died about a half hour later.
Mr. Hanson had been sick most of the winter and yesterday noon was too weak to stand alone. Evidently he must have later become insane. One of his wife's daughters works for City Marshal Wheatman and the other he sent down town on an errand. After she had gone Hanson rose, knocked his wife down and went upstairs and secured a razor. Coming down, he found his wife in the act of leaving the house and made two slashes at her with the razor, cutting her dress with one of them. Mrs. Hanson screamed for help and her daughter hastened across the street just in time to find that her step-father had cut his throat from ear to car. Medical aid was summoned at once, but nothing could be done to save the man’s life. Mr. Hanson was probably between fifty and sixty yours old, and has worked at various occupations, such as wood sawing, etc., for a number of years.
