Elvin J. Vobr, age 79, of Ridgeway, IA died Thursday, Sept 5, 2013 at Wellington Place in Decorah. Funeral services will be Tuesday, Sept 10, at 11:00 at Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco. Interment will follow in Bohemian National Cemetery, Protivin, IA. Visitation will be Monday from 5 to 8 pm at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco. Elvin was born February 7, 1934 in Cresco to Charles and Mildred (Mertl) Vobr. He married Dolores Huhe on June 19, 1954 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. As a young man Elvin took an interest in welding and in 1959 established his own welding shop “Vobr Welding and Machine” in Ridgeway. He frequently took items he made from rerod such as shepherd hooks, and other lawn ornament items to Swap Meets and Flea Markets where he also sold welding supplies. You could always here Polka Music on the radio when in his shop. He never retired from welding and was welding up until he suffered a stroke on Aug 19th. Elvin enjoyed visiting with people that would stop by his Swap Meet booth and everyplace he went he was always seen with his William Penn Perfecto cigars; if he wasn’t smoking it, then chewing on it. He was an avid hunter; having taken trips Antelope hunting in Wyoming. Many times he went to Lake Superior for Smelt and Salmon fishing. For over 50 years Elvin was an active member of the Ridgeway Fire Department. Elvin will be remembered for his quote “The only thing free in the world is advice, and therefore advice is worth nothing.” Elvin is survived by his wife, Dolores Vobr of Ridgeway; six children: Maggie (Bob) Hlubek of Ridgeway, Judy (Calvin) Spalla of Bluffton, Charles Vobr of Ridgeway, Jim “Chico” (Annette) Vobr of Ridgeway, Jeff (Jeni) Vobr of Decorah and Mark (special friend Brandi) Vobr of Ramsey, MN; eight grandchildren; 6 step grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; 5 step great-grandchildren; three siblilngs: Lillian Maroushek of Hastings, MN, Ray (Nora) Vobr of Cresco and Johnie (Carol) Vobr of Cresco. Elvin was preceded in death by his parents, and two siblings: Ed Vobr and Viola Doubek. Honorary casket bearers are his grandchildren, his children will be casketbears.

Visitation:
5:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Monday, September 9, 2013 and from 10 am until time of services at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco.

Service:
11:00 am on Tuesday, September 10, 2013 at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco.

Cemetery:
Bohemian National Cemetery, rural Protivin.
