Ted Schrandt, age 84, of Decorah, IA, died on Monday, September 9, 2013, at Gundersen Health System in LaCrosse, WI.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, September 14, 2013, at St. Benedict's Catholic Church, 307 West Main Street, Decorah, IA, with Rev. Phillip Gibbs presiding. Burial will be at St. Benedict's Catholic Cemetery, Decorah, Iowa.

Friends may call from 3:00-7:00 p.m., on Friday, September 13, 2013, at the Schluter-Balik Funeral Home in Decorah, and also from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., on Saturday morning at the funeral home.

Theodore “Ted” Joseph Schrandt was born on August 12, 1929, the son of Theodore and Magdaline (Geising) Schrandt on the family farm near Festina, Iowa. Ted attended St. Mary’s Catholic School in Festina. He served in the US Navy Seabees from Oct. 1950 to August 24, 1954, and served in Guam. He married Edna Louise Schnitzler on January 21, 1953 at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Festina, Iowa. After the service, Ted and Edna returned to the area and farmed west of Ridgeway for two years and farmed for two years with her father and her brother John, near Blufton. In 1959, they moved to a farm north of Locust and in March 1966 purchased the farm in Canoe Township, where they farmed for several years. In 1983, they moved to the acreage near Decorah and in 1992 into town. Throughout the years, Ted was a 4-H Leader, auctioned and sale clerked and started the 4-H horse program in Winneshiek County. Ted was a member of St. Benedict Catholic Church, Helof-Holm VFW Post #1977, the Pony Express Riders, Winneshiek County Saddle Club and the North East Iowa Saddle Club Association (NEISCA), Winneshiek County Agriculture Association. Ted also spent many hours volunteering at the Winneshiek County Fair and the Iowa State Fair. Ted loved his horses and above all her loved his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Ted is survived by his wife: Edna Schrandt, Decorah, IA. Three children: Mary (Bill) Prouty, New Hampton, IA; Mark (Kim) Schrandt, Cashton, WI; and Barb Thayer, Urbandale, IA. Six grandchildren: Zach Prouty, Kelly (Mark) Lehnherr, Kara (Jacob) Cina, Stacy (Jay) Kraabel, Hannah Thayer and Emma Thayer. Three great grandchildren: Brooke & Brady Lehnherr and Jasper Cina. One sister: Eunice Krause, Dallas, OR. Sisters and brothers-in-law: Norma Schrandt, Cedar Falls, IA; Mary Lou Manning, Lansing, IA; Evelyn Schnitzler, Decorah, IA; Margaret (friend, Frank Klemm) Kamp, Marion, IA; Joyce Mailey, Cedar Rapids, IA; Dorothy Kay (Ronald) Barth, Cedar Rapids, IA; Charles (Fran) Schnitzler, Burr Oak, IA; Donald (Carol) Schnitzler, Decorah, IA; and Julie Marhoul, Decorah, IA, along with many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Ted was preceded in death by his parents: Theodore “Dick” and Magdaline (Geising) Schrandt. Five brothers: Walter (Orpha) Schrandt; Herb (Florence) Schrandt; Tom (Florence) Schrandt; Bill Schrandt and Hugo (Lorraine) Schrandt. Four sisters: Winnifred (Bill) Hartman, Wilma (Lawrence) Schlee; Ann (Bill) Wagner and Della (Lambert “Speed”) Walz. Brothers-in-law: Ken Krause, Kenneth Faabert, Louis Kamp and John Schnitzler. Two nieces: Becky Hauser and Kathy Pilgrim. Two nephews: Marvin Schrandt and Jeff Krause. Ted’s father and mother-in-law: John and Edith (Hiller) Schnitzler.
