Leonard Tietz, age 82, of Decorah, IA, died on Friday, September 6, 2013, at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, September 10, 2013, at the Washington Prairie Lutheran Church, 1725 Washington Prairie Road, Decorah, IA, with Rev. Mark Kvale presiding. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call from 3:00-7:00 p.m., on Monday at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah, and also after 10:00 a.m., at the church on Tuesday. There will be a VFW Memorial Service at 6:00 p.m., at the funeral home on Monday evening.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in memory of Leonard to the Washington Prairie Lutheran Church, 1725 Washington Prairie Road, or to Winneshiek County Hospice, 901 Montgomery Street, Decorah, IA 52101.

Leonard Martin Tietz was born on March 23, 1931, the son of Walter and Elsie (Martins) Tietz, in Luana, Iowa. Leonard was baptized at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Luana, and was confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville. Leonard grew up in the Luana and Frankville areas. He graduated from Postville High School in 1949. Leonard served in the US Air Force from 1952-1955. On June 1, 1958, he married Lavonne Schave at the Immanual Lutheran Church in Cresco, IA. To this union, two sons were born, Galen and Randy. They made their home in Frankville Township where they farmed and raised beef cattle for over thirty years. Even after retirement, Leonard enjoyed helping on the farm during planting and harvesting time. Leonard served on various boards at Washington Prairie Lutheran Church and served many years as a Trustee of the Frankville Fire Department. He also served eighteen years on the Winneshiek Mutual Insurance Association Board. Leonard obtained his pilot license in 1964 and enjoyed flying with the Decorah Flying Club for over fifteen years. Leonard loved to go fishing in Minnesota with friends and in Canada with his two sons. Leonard and Lavonne spent many years going to Arizona for the winter months and enjoyed seeing family, friends, and neighbors there. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a party and a trip to Hawaii with their children and grandchildren. In later years, Leonard enjoyed spending time with friend and fishing buddies at the Family Table Restaurant having morning coffee.

Leonard is survived by his wife: Lavonne Tietz, Decorah, IA. Two sons: Galen (Melanie) Tietz, Decorah, IA, and Randy (Joyce) Tietz, Cedar Rapids, IA. Four grandchildren: Jordan & Daiton Tietz and Kyle & Alex Tietz.

Leonard was preceded in death by his parents: Walter and Elsie (Martins) Tietz, one granddaughter: Danica Rae Tietz..
