WALTER RATHBUN.
On Sunday last another of the very earliest pioneers died at his home in Frankville township.
Walter Rathbun came to Iowa in 1850, found land to suit him and located in Frankville township. This was more than a year before the county was organized, and he secured his farm at a cost of less than $1 per acre by locating it with Mexican war scrip. Subsequently he sold his farm, bought a more satisfactory place near by, and on the two passed forty-seven years of his life. He was born at Portage, Allegany County, N. Y., Dec. 12, 1825, and consequently at his death was aged 71 years, 7 months and 13 days. At 18 years of age he came with his parents to Rockford, Ill., and just before coming to Iowa married Miss Wealthy Loomis. To them eight children were born, of whom three died in infancy, and five survive, with the beloved wife and mother, to mourn the loss of a kind husband and father. The survivors are Mrs. Orrin Lampson, San Jacinto, Cal.: Mrs. Newton Freer, Heron Lake, Minn.: Mrs. W. G. Fish, Cresco, Ia.; Mrs. A. W. Oxley, Ossian, Ia., and G. W. Rathbun, Ossian, Iowa.
Burial services were held in the Centennial church on Tuesday, Rev. A. G. Wilson, of Decorah, officiating.
