Richard Lewis Aswegan age 75 of Decorah died Friday August 2, 2013 at the Griffin Nursing Center in Knoxville, Iowa.

Memorial Services are Friday, August 9,2013 at the Schluter-Balik Funeral Home of Decorah, Ia at 3:00 p.m. with Richard's family present from 2:00 p.m. Burial will follow services at Lutheran Cemetery in Decorah Ia.

Richard was born in Fern, Iowa on January 10, 1938, the son of Glenn and Neta (Harris) Aswegan. Richard was raised in the Decorah area and attended school in Decorah. On February 1, 1957 in Elk Pointe, South Dakota Richard and Orvetta Ruth Halweg were united in marriage. They have shared 56 years of marriage and were blessed with six children: Debra, Randall, Richard, Jr., Steven, Terry and Sandra. As a young man Richard enlisted in the United States Air Force. Richard served his country from 1955 to 1975 and served in the Vietnam War from 1969 to 1970. Richard worked in maintenance and later a maintenance supervisor for the Air Force. He retired from the Air Force as a sergeant. After his retirement from the Air Force Richard was a maintenance man for CamCar and later Cliff House Motel both of Decorah. He was also a certified pool technician. Richard enjoyed his family and many friends. He was a member of the Decorah Lutheran Church. He had many hobbies, which include bowling, playing pool and he especially enjoyed fishing. Richard lived for four years with his daughter Debra in Knoxville. During his stay he was very active at the Knoxville Senior Center and would start his mornings visiting with his friends over breakfast at Mr. C’s.

Richard is survived by his wife Orvetta Aswegan and three children: Debra (Dennis) Dakin of Knoxville, Richard Aswegan, Jr. of Decorah and Steven (Kim) Aswegan of Calmar, Iowa; five grandchildren: Tiffany, Tabitha and Travis Aswegan, Connor and Myla Dakin; three step grandchildren: Dennis Dakin, Jr., Mary Rose Lucas and April Dakin; and six step great-grandchildren: J.R., Sydney, Landon, Miles, Ian and Zachary. Richard is also survived by two brothers: Emil and Robert Aswegan; five sisters: Caroline Nelson, Peggy Packett, Lorena Krummenoehl, Jeannie Frazier and Neta Kisner; and special friends: Brian and Jennifer Ullestad and family, Heather Gordon and Tony Lynde and family. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Randall Aswegan; two daughters, Sandra Anderson and Terry Aswegan; and one brother Lyle.

Richard’s wishes were to be cremated and a memorial service will be held at the Schluter-Balik Funeral Home of Decorah, Iowa on Friday August 9th at 3:00 p.m. with Rev. David Sorenson presiding. Richard’s family present starting at 2:00 p.m. Burial will follow services at Lutheran Cemetery with military rites by Helof Holm VFW Chapter #1977 of Decorah.
