Larry Heying, age 72, of Calmar, IA, died on Wednesday, June 19, 2013, at his home with his loving family at his side.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, June 22, 2013, at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Festina, with Monsignor Cletus Hawes presiding. Burial will be in the church cemetery with military rites by the Halverson – Giesen American Legion Post #266.

Friends may call from 3:00-7:00 p.m., on Friday, June 21, 2013, and also from 9:00-10:00 a.m., on Saturday morning at the Festina Parish Center in Festina.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the American Cancer Society or to the charity of their choice.

Lawrence Clement “Larry” Heying was born on June 22, 1940, the son of Peter and Agnes (Bohr) Heying in Decorah, Iowa. Larry attended St. Mary’s Catholic School in Festina until 10th grade and finished his education at DeSales Catholic High School in Ossian in 1959. After graduation, Larry enlisted in the US Army serving three years with one year being stationed in Korea. He was honorably discharged in 1962. Larry was united in marriage to Elaine Hageman on June 22, 1968, at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Festina. He worked for several years at White Implement in Charles City and farmed the family farm. Larry sold Pioneer Seed for 30 years, through which Larry and Elaine made many wonderful friends. After retiring, Larry helped Pat Tekippe with the Pioneer business on a part-time basis. In July 2012, health reasons forced Larry to retire. Larry enjoyed golfing, fishing, playing cards, listening to gospel music, Fox News and politics. Above all, Larry loved and cherished his family and grandchildren. He was a lifelong member of Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church.

Larry is survived by his wife: Elaine Heying, Calmar, IA. Three children: Wanda (Jerry) Weis, Decorah, IA; Sharon (Marc) Lacourly, Fayetteville, GA; and Wayne Heying, Calmar, IA. Four grandchildren: Leah & Jaden Weis and Alex & Shae Dwyer. Three step-grandchildren: Jordan, Eric & Isabella Lacourly. Six sisters: Ruth Langreck, Cresco, IA; Kay (Stanley) Humpal, Decorah, Rosalyn (Eugene) Bodensteiner, West Union, IA; Elsie Timp and Joyce (Richard) Shindelar, Calmar, IA; and Marcie (Larry) Havel, Osage, IA. Four brothers: Irvin (Marion) Heying, Sumner, IA; Cleo (Emily) Heying, Luana, IA; Richard (Linda) Heying, Ossian, IA; and Donald (Carolyn) Heying, Calmar, IA. Brothers and sisters-in-law: Frank (Judy) Hageman, Decorah, IA; Alvin (Debra) Hageman, Ossian, IA; Dennis Hageman, Calmar, IA; Reuben (Zandra) Hageman, Calmar, IA; Vernon (friend, Suzanne) Hageman, Calmar, IA, Neil Hageman, Fort Atkinson, IA; Martin (Cindy) Hageman, Fort Atkinson, IA; and Dennis Boyer, St. Lucas, IA, along with many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents: Peter and Agnes (Bohr) Heying. Granddaughter: Brittany Weis. Brother: Hugo (Lucille) Heying. Two brothers-in-law: Ray Langreck and Donald Timp. Sister-in-law: Maxine Boyer. His father and mother-in-law: Frank and Ida Hageman, along with many nieces and nephews.
