Norman Henry Schultz, 91, of Castalia, Iowa passed away Friday, June 7, 2013 at the Good Samaritan Center in Postville, Iowa. He was born on a farm outside of Castalia, Iowa on February 7, 1922. He was the youngest son of Henry and Louise (Linderbaum) Schultz. Norman was baptized on July 1, 1923 by E. Schmidt and confirmed on March 21, 1937 by R.B. Garten. Norman always thought he had a pretty good farm life growing up even though his father died of an injury when he was six months old. He attended school through the eighth grade, then spent his time helping his mother and brother on the farm.

In January 1943, Norman was drafted into the Second World War and served as a PFC in the H&S Co. 294th Engineer Combat Battalion. He took his military training in various southern U.S. states and was then shipped to England in January 1944 to prepare for the Normandy Invasion. Along with serving in Normandy, he also served in four other battles of Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Germany and was awarded five bronze medals and one silver star. His battalion along with another, built the first bridge over the Rhine River in Germany in 1944.

Following the close of the war, Norman was discharged in December 1945. He returned to the farm and on May 1, 1947 was united in marriage with Gertrude V. Ball at Monona Lutheran Church. Two children were born to this union.

Norman was a farmer all his life and took pride in caring for his land, livestock and buildings. He enjoyed spending time with his family, friends and the many coffee buddies he has made over the years. His most recent fondest memory was traveling with his military comrades on a five day WWII Veteran’s bus trip to Washington D.C. in September 2010. He enjoyed reminiscing about this trip to everyone he met. Norman also enjoyed playing cards and checkers, snowmobiling, fishing, reading the newspapers and observing the countryside; he was always busy. He was a member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Postville.

Survivors include his wife, Gertrude of sixty-six years; son, Norman L. and wife Ann of Postville; daughter, Carol Kelly of Decorah; six grandchildren, Kara (Steve) Nudo, Ryan Schultz, Alisa (David) Shreve, Emy (Doug) Dunfee, Seth Kelly and Devin Kelly; a great-granddaughter, Layla Shreve; sisters-in-law, Marjorie Schultz, Elaine Wilkins and Sharon Schultz; brothers-in-law, Ralph Hornberger and Jim Schultz and several nieces and nephews.
