Georgina Elsbernd, age 93, of Calmar, Iowa, died peacefully on Sunday, June 30, 2013, at the Ossian Senior Hospice with her loving family at her side.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, July 5, 2013, at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, 304 South Maryville Street, Calmar, IA, with Rev. Donald Hawes presiding. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call from: 3:00-7:00 p.m., on Thursday, July 4, 2013, at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, French Chapel in Calmar, Iowa, and also after 10:00 a.m., at the church on Friday morning.

Georgina A. Elsbernd was born February 16, 1920 the daughter of Charles & Anna (Taylor) Humpal, on the family farm north of Calmar, Iowa. Because her mother died when she was two days old she was raised by John & Mary Korbel, Georgina’s aunt and uncle. From then on she took the Korbel name. Georgina received her education at St. Wenceslaus Catholic School in Spillville, then Calmar High School, graduating in 1939. She attended A.I.B. in Des Moines and following her graduation returned to Calmar and worked at Meyer Grocery in Calmar. She met Cletus Elsbernd at a dance in Fort Atkinson and they were married on Tuesday, February 15, 1944, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville by Rev. J.P. Chihak. She spent all her married life as a homemaker until she became a resident at the Aase Haugen Home and then the Ossian Hospice. She enjoyed cooking, baking Kolaches, watching her Cubs and gardening. She enjoyed spending time with her family and the traditional Sunday night get-together at the house. Georgina also loved her flower gardens and reading. Georgina was a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church.

Georgina is survived by her husband of sixty-nine years, Cletus Elsbernd, Calmar, IA. Four sons: Robert (Michele) Elsbernd, Fort Atkinson, IA; William Elsbernd, Decorah, IA; Ron (Phyllis) Elsbernd, Calmar, IA; and Rick Elsbernd, Calmar, IA. One daughter: Diane (Jerry) Langreck, Calmar, IA. One daughter-in-law: Nancy Elsbernd (friend, Gary Zidlicky) Decorah, IA. Twelve grandchildren: Brandon (Denise) Elsbernd, Justin (Sue) Elsbernd, Kyle (Kristin) Elsbernd, Ryan (Cindy) Elsbernd, Matt (Melanie) Elsbernd, Theresa (Ryan) Otte, Brad (Kelly) Elsbernd, Alicia Elsbernd, Brian (Kelly) Cook, Chrissy (Chad Bakken) Langreck, Katie Elsbernd and Kylie Elsbernd. Eighteen great grandchildren: Dylan, Hailey & Alexis Elsbernd, Olivia & Lauren Elsbernd, Lila & Jax Elsbernd, Sam & Lars Elsbernd, Nora & Aiden Elsbernd, William Otte, Peyton Elsbernd, Jacob & Brody Cook, Mathias, Zecheriah & Georgina Bakken. She is also survived by a sister-in-law: Ruth Elsbernd, Ossian, IA, and brother-in-law: Ed Praska of Cresco, IA.

Georgina was preceded in death by her birth parents: Charles and Anna Humpal. Her foster parents: John and Mary Korbel. Two sons: Daniel in 1956 and Kenneth in 1993. Her father and mother-in-law: Frank and Ida Elsbernd. Five brothers: George, Leonard Humpal, Louis Humpal, William Korbel and Joseph Korbel. Three sisters: Mae Tuma, Regina Riha, and Mary Praska. Six brothers-in-law: Myron, Linus and Romuald Elsbernd, Bill Riha and Virgil Humpal and Joe Tuma. Four sisters-in-laws: Marge Humpal, Dorothy Elsbernd, Virginia Humpal and Tillie Korbel.
