Spencer Hotvedt, prominent Hesper farmer, dies at age 40
Spencer H. Hotvedt, a well-known Hesper township farmer, died July 17 at a Rochester, Minn. hospital of cancer. He was 40 years old and had been ill approximately two months.
Mr. Hotvedt was a prominent Holstein breeder and belonged to the county organization and was state director of the Iowa Holstein Association. He also was active in community affairs as a member of the Decorah Community School Board and the Winneshiek County Fair Board and belonged to the Decorah Elks Lodge and the Hesper Lutheran Church.
Funeral services were conducted by Pastor Paul H. Christenson at the Hesper Lutheran Church Friday, July 20 at 2 p.m. Burial was in the Hesper Lutheran Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Kenneth Barnes, Alan Hovden, Donald Blegen, Daryl Bergan, Marcellus Broghammer and Dean Nierling. Mrs. Arthur Anderson was organist and accompanied the congregation as they sang hymns. Arrangements were made by Steine Funeral Home.
Spencer Hotvedt was born March 6, 1939 in Decorah to Helmer and Selma Hotvedt. He attended high school here and was married February 21, 1959 at Big Canoe Church to Janice Shuros. The couple had farmed in the Washington Prairie area prior to purchasing a farm in the Hesper community.
Mr. Hotvedt is survived by his mother, Selma Hotvedt of Decorah; his wife; five children, Daniel, Mark, Craig, Lori and Connie and a brother, Orvin Hotvedt or R3, Decorah.
His father preceded him in death.
