JAMES F. MOORE died at the home of his brother, C.O. Moore in Decorah township on Saturday last. He was, we believe, the eldest son of Capt. Moore, one of the very pioneers, and a man of mark in his day. Deceased was born in New York, Sept. 10th, 1827, and came to Iowa as early as 1851, for in that year he ran for sheriff in the first election held in Winneshiek county, but was defeated by George Bachel, one of the Fort Atkinson pioneers. In 1853 he ran again for the same office and was elected. Subsequently he removed from the county, and when the war of the Rebellion broke out was residing in Illinois. July 12th, 1861, he enlisted as a private in Co. G, 19th Illinois infantry, afterwards was transferred as a Sergeant to Co. B, Bridge's Battery, 1st Illinois light artillery, and was discharged at Chicago, July 7th, 1864, after three years service, by special order of the War Department, on account of disabilities received in the service. He returned to Iowa last year an invalid, became an inmate of the Soldiers' Home at Marshalltown, last winter, and was spending the summer visiting with his friends, expecting to return to the Home with cool weather. The funeral services were held at the old family home last Monday, Rev. J. Willard preaching the sermon. Forty-seven members of Col. Hughes Post No. 168, G.A.R., of which he was a member, attended, and his remains were consigned to the grave by his comrades in the burial service of the order.
