Decorah Republican, and re-printed in the Postville Herald of Thur., 22 November 1923.

John Malanaphy, who had his hand caught and badly mangled about ten days ago while working on the Ben Jewell farm, died in the city hospital Monday morning at two o'clock, say the Decorah Republican. Shortly after he was brought to the hospital gangrene set in and two of his fingers were amputated. This it was thought would relieve further trouble and he would get along alright. Saturday evening he was attacked with lock-jaw and although Dr. Jewell and Dr. Daly of Decorah and Dr. Daly of Cresco were in constant attendance nothing could be done to relieve him until death ended his sufferings. When it became known his case was hopeless he was kept under the influence of morphine so he did not suffer much pain.
