Joseph Shimek
The angel of death entered our midst and called to rest one of the oldest citizens, Joseph Shimek of Schley, who died at Cedar Valley hospital at Charles City Sunday, Dec. 29, 1946, after a few days of critical illness. He had been in failing health for about two years.
Deceased was born to Wenzl and Johana Shimek, Aug. 8, 1867, near Conover, Ia., where he was educated in the public and parochial schools in Spillville. He came to Howard county about 55 years ago where he settled on a tract of land which later was his farm, until 10 years ago when he retired to his home at Schley. He was united in marriage with Caroline Kubesh, Feb. 9, 1892 at St. Wenceslaus church at Spillville, by Rev. Father Thos. Bily. To their union ten children were born. They are: Louise, Mrs. Lewis Moravetz, Elma; William A., of Maple Leaf; Mary (deceased); Jessie, Mrs. Ruben Svestka, Schley; Johanna M., Detroit; Lucy, Mrs. Bernard Carroll, Wyandotte, Mich.; Helen, Mrs. Leslie Ingraham, Cresco; Edward J., Maple Leaf; Bernadette, Mrs. Thos. Burke, Elma, and Joseph (deceased). Eight children, with the wife survive.
He is also survived by 25 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Three brothers and two sisters also survive: Frank of Spillvile, Thos. of Lourdes, Mrs. Anna Ludwig and Mrs. Johanna Herold, both of Spillville and Winzl Shimek of Lime Springs. One brother John of Conover and one sister Mary, Mrs. John Ludwig preceded him in death.
Mr. Shimek was a faithful member of the Roman Catholic church and died fortified by the rites of his faith. Requiem high mass was offered by Father A. L. Zachar at Holy Cross church in Schley, on Tuesday, Dec. 31. Interment was in the adjoining cemetery. Pallbearers were Arnold Moravetz, Arnold Meier, Arnold Hruska, Ralph Zak, Julius and Adolph Shimek.
He was a loyal husband and father and had a wide circle of friends who will mourn his departure. He was always active in church and community affairs, having been one of the organizers of the present Holy Cross parish and during his younger years serving on the school board for several years also acting as director and later as president of the Maple Leaf Co-op Creamery.
