Alice J. Smith, age 86, of Decorah, died on Sunday, December 7, 2003 at home of a sudden illness.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, December 10, 2003 at 11 a.m. at Decorah Lutheran Church in Ridgeway, IA by Rev. James Glesne with burial in Lutheran Cemetery, Decorah, IA. Visitation was held on Tuesday, December 9, 2003 at Fjelstul Funeral Home with a V.F.W. Auxiliary Service at 6:30 p.m., and on Wednesday at the church.

Alice Jeanette (Buer) Smith was born January 28, 1917 in Decorah, IA to Herman Adolph and Anna Marie (Helgerson) Buer. She was baptized on February 18, 1919 and was confirmed on June 7, 1931 at Decorah Lutheran Church. She was a graduate of Decorah High School with the class of 1934.

She was united in marriage with Clarence V. Smith on July 4, 1941 at the Decorah Lutheran Church parsonage in Decorah, IA. To this union four children were born: Phyllis, Donald, Mary Jane, and Betty.

Alice worked at the Winneshiek County Courthouse and then she was bookkeeper for Jim Ronan, Ronan Brothers and various other businesses in Decorah. She also worked at the V.F.W. and Ruby's Restaurant. Alice was a member of Decorah Lutheran Church where she was very active in WELCA and Circle, and she served as treasurer of the church. She was a life member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary. She was also a member of the Business & Professional Women organization, the Red Hat Society, and she served as a tour guide at Vesterheim Norwegian American Museum. Alice loved to play cards.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Clarence, on September 6, 1974; her son, Donald, on March 14, 1994; one brother, Jewell K. Buer and one granddaughter, Melanie Kolaas.

She is survived by her 3 daughters, Phyllis (Don) Crump of Rochester, MN, Mary Jane (Dale) Maas of Dubuque, IA, and Betty (Alan) Martins of Luana, IA; 11 grandchildren; 4 step-grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren, and 5 step- great grandchildren.
