Velva Lovstuen, age 95, of Burr Oak, IA died Saturday, September 29, 2012 at the Green Lea Manor Nursing Home in Mabel, MN.

Funeral Service will be 11:00 a.m., Friday, October 5, 2012 at the Burr Oak Lutheran Church at 2358-360th St. in Burr Oak, IA. Burial will be in the Burr Oak Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 4, 2012, at the Schluter Balik Funeral Home in Decorah there will also be visitation after 10:00 a.m., at the church on Friday.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be given in memory of Velva to the Burr Oak Cemetery or to the Green Lea Manor.

Velva Henrietta (Kruse) Lovstuen was born on May 31, 1917, the daughter of George and Cloa (Mitchell) Kruse in Allamakee County, Franklin Township, near Luana, Iowa. Velva attended Luana Consolidated Schools. In 1928, she moved with her family into Frankville Township and attended school in Frankville and graduated from Postville High School in 1936. Velva married Alert Lovstuen on June 1, 1937 at the Lutheran Parsonage, in Waukon, Iowa. In 1938, they started farming in Glenwood Township. In 1940, they moved to Burr Oak, where they farmed until 1977. Velva was always a wonderful mother and homemaker, where she baked, gardened, canned, quilted and crocheted for many years. She also enjoyed dancing with Alert in her younger years. Velva was a member of the Burr Oak Lutheran Church in Burr Oak, Iowa.

Velva’s survivors include her daughter: Vivian Vine, Mabel, MN. One son: Norbert (Diane) Lovstuen, Decorah, IA. One son-in-law: Alvin Vine, Decorah, IA. Twelve grandchildren: Jeff Vine, Dave (Patti) Vine, Wanda (Dennis) Lawson, John (Lori) Vine, Pam (Randy) Renard, and Tom (fiance, Cindy Koch) Vine, Carrie Swenson, Mike Wilson, Brenda (Dan) Tollefson, Diane (Don) Tollefsrud, Aaron (Melissa) Lovstuen, Nick (Allysen) Lovstuen, and Darren (special friend, Mikayla Finley) Lovstuen. Great grandchildren: Traci (Joel) Ridgway, Shana (Evan) Meyer, Justin Lawson, Brittney Lawson, Maxwell Vine, Katie Renard, Matthew (Tina) Swenson, Sarah (Mike) Dawley, Kristine Swenson, Megan (Shawn) Merkel, Leigh (Dustin) Myer, Ross Wilson, Samantha & Theo Tollefson, Tracer & Colton Tollefsrud, Brendan, Garrett, Maggie and Mara Lovstuen, Anya, Anders & Lyla Lovstuen, Bobbie McDermott and Brittany McDermott. Great great grandchildren: Emmerson Ridgway, Caleb Meyer, Shawn & Mason Swenson, Connor Merkel and Nora Willson. One brother: George Kruse, Decorah, IA.

Velva was preceded in death by her parents: George and Cloa (Mitchell) Kruse. Her husband: Alert Lovstuen on Nov. 14, 1999. One daughter: Donna Vine on Nov. 22, 2011. One son-in-law: Darrell Vine March 5, 2009. One granddaughter: Connie Wilson Jan. 27, 2009. One sister: Mila Mae (Milton) Lovstuen on June 23, 2012. One sister-in-law: Donna Kruse Feb. 20, 2011.
