Les was born Aug. 31, 1948, in Decorah, the son of Vernon and Frances Fjelstul. He graduated from Maquoketa Valley High School in 1966. He was drafted into the U.S. Army April 23, 1968, and was stationed at Ft. Bliss, Texas and Ft. Rucker, Ala. Les served a tour of duty in Vietnam and was promoted to sergeant. He was a decorated veteran with many medals awarded him during his to tour of duty. After Les was honorably discharged from the army he worked in a rock quarry with his Dad. Later Les became a master mechanic and worked for many years on forklifts and automobiles – you name it, he could fix it.
His greatest love for work was enforcement of the law. Les spent many of his last years as a bounty hunter, private investigator and bail bondsman. He owned his own bail bond business until his health would not allow him to chase “bad guys” anymore.
Les enjoyed many sports, including softball, which he played for many years of his life. Many memories were created on the softball field with his close friends. He also enjoyed playing golf, hunting, boating and truly anything where he could have a good time with friends and family.
Les is survived by his son, Scott (Brandi) Fjelstul; granddaughters, Kayla, Annie and Danica Fjelstul of Hopkinton; two sisters, Kathy Craig of Mesa, Ariz. and Becky (Larry) Sundermeyer-Tisor of Mason City; two brothers, Dave Fjelstul of Glendale, Ariz. and Jeff (Laura) Fjelstul of Pawnee, Ill.; his former wife, Darlene (Gray) Fjelstul, of Hopkinton; and many nieces, nephews and others who loved him dearly.
