Helen Johnson Miller

Helen Johnson Miller, 94, passed away April 15, 2012, at Calvin Community. Services are Friday, April 20, at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines at 12 p.m. Family will greet friends one hour prior to the service. Burial is at Lutheran Cemetery in Decorah.

Helen was born Aug. 5, 1917, in Decorah, to Hilda (Berg) and Charles Johnson. While in high school she met her future husband, Leonard Miller, during a school play at Luther College. After graduation the two were married and spent their life raising their family. The family lived in various communities in Iowa and Minnesota as Leonard worked as a school administrator. Helen loved music and was an accomplished piano player and singer. She enjoyed playing bridge, gardening, golf and travel, and was an amazing cook.

She was very proud of and loved her grandchildren. After retiring in Hampton, Helen was active in the History and Heritage Club, Mother’s Club and St. John’s Lutheran Women’s Group, and baked much of the lefse for church bazaars.

Her memory will be cherished by her children, Jane (Frank) Grundmeier, Mary Kramer, Edward (Becky) Miller, Anne (Steve) Paullus, and Lee Miller; grandchildren, Joel (Julie) Grundmeier, Eric Grundmeier, Bret (Cheryl) Grundmeier, Christopher Kramer, Paul (Kat) Kramer, Jonathan (Sheila) Kramer, Kristin (Jason) Buchner, Scott Miller, Benjamin Miller, Andrew (Jill) Paullus, Leah (Mark Bethel) Paullus; 14 great-grandchildren; and numerous other family members.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three siblings; son, Charles Edward age 7; grandson, Wade Edward Grundmeier 11 months; and her son-in-law, Yale Kramer.
