Patricia ‘Monya’ Gipson
Patricia “Monya” Sue Gipson, 74, of Ossian, passed away Sunday, July 8, 2012, at St. Mary’s Hospital. A visitation was at Schmitz-Grau Funeral Home Saturday, July 14, from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. with a brief memorial service at 12 p.m. Memorials may be directed to Patricia’s family, who will allocate them to the Ossian public library and other charities in her memory. Schmitz – Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service, of Ossian, handled the arrangements.
Patty was born Jan. 20, 1938, in Enterprise, Okla., the daughter of Clara and James Aaron Sanderson. As the dust bowl plagued Oklahoma, her family moved to the San Joaquin Valley in California, finally settling in Arvin. She graduated from Arvin High School in 1955 and married her high school sweetheart, Paul Gipson, in the same year. After attending a trade school, she went on to be an executive secretary at the Bakersfield Californian for 10 years. She cherished memories of family trips to the Gulf of Mexico and Lake Tahoe as well as visits with her family in Oklahoma. After spending eight years living in Walls, Miss., a suburb of Memphis, she moved back to Ossian so she could spend more time with her granddaughter, to watch and shape her into the woman she is today.
She worked hard her whole life and was well thought of by all of her co-workers. Her final employment was at the Ossian Senior Hospice. She loved her time there in the kitchen helping to prepare meals for the residents. Patty will be remembered as a devoted mother and grandmother. She enjoyed playing nickel poker at the casino, reading books and sewing. A wonder in the kitchen, Patty’s meatloaf, pinto beans, fried potatoes and corn bread will never be forgotten.
Patty was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Paul; and brothers, James and Bill Sanderson.
Patty is survived by two daughters, Marilyn Gipson of Ossian and Myra Gipson of Des Moines; her granddaughter, Jamie Burch, also of Des Moines; her two sisters, Virginia Wagnon of Choctaw, Okla. and Shirley Rhynes of Arvin; two sisters-in-law, Diane Gipson-Heath of Santa Maria, Calif. and Sharon Gipson of Tucson, Ariz.; and brother-in-law, Frank Gipson, of Bakersfield, Calif.
