Eugene ‘Gene’ Arnburg

Eugene “Gene” Noel Arnburg, 76, of Postville, passed away at his home Saturday, Aug. 18, 2012.

Gene was born Jan. 4, 1936, at Adair, the son of Frederick Charles William and Pauline Isabell (Woods) Arnburg. He was baptized and confirmed at the First Presbyterian Church in Adair. Gene graduated from Adair High School in 1954. He served in the U.S. Army from 1955 until 1957. Gene was united in marriage with Connie Louise Moorhead at the First Presbyterian Church in Adair June 7, 1959. Gene worked as an electrician at various places in Iowa. He owned and operated an electric motor repair and electrical contracting shop for several years while operating a cellulose insulation manufacturing company in Postville. Gene then became an instructor for the electrical department at NICC in Calmar for over 25 years.

In his “retirement years,” Gene assisted the college as an interim instructor for an additional three years. Gene and Connie owned Family Total Health and Family Laundry in Postville. He was a firm believer in education and contributed to NICC scholarship funds through his vending machine business. Gene is to be inducted into the NICC Hall of Fame Oct. 15.

Gene’s life was based on the foundation of family, church and community. He was an active member of the Presbyterian Church for 56 years and also was a member of the church choir and of various community and church committees – notably, the cherished Mother and Daughter Banquet committee. He also was a member of the Lions Club and Postville Fire Dept., and was a Boy Scout leader. Gene and Connie were involved with several mission trips in South Dakota (construction of a church), Mississippi (post-Katrina rebuilding), Alabama (Tuscaloosa tornado relief) and N.D. (flood relief),

Gene was well known for his constant beaming smile, optimistic attitude and for finding the good in all people. Gene welcomes everyone into his life with open arms. He was a wonderful role model to all who were fortunate enough to meet him.

Gene was survived by his wife, Connie, of Postville; three children: Scott (Kelli) Arnburg of Clear Lake; Pam (Dave) Irons of Decorah; and Kim (Doug) Johnson of Stratford, Wis.; 11 grandchildren: Mariah (Zach), Tyler, Jasmine, Hailey, Lacey, Dalton, Dallas, Dawson, Sydney, Austin and Jesse; one daughter-in-law, Ginger Arnburg of Des Moines; and two sisters, Janice Crawford of Walford; and Naomi (Jerry) Bird of Hazelton. He also is survived by many nieces and nephews; and by his foreign exchange student daughters: Sandy, Marcie and Gizelle; and by his foreign exchange student son, Eduardo.

Gene was preceded in death by his son, Doug, who died in 2007; a daughter who died in infancy; his parents; and one brother-in-law, Gary Crawford.
