Darlyne Hackman, age 81, of Decorah, IA, died on Tuesday, December 4, 2012, at the Aase Haugen Nursing Home in Decorah, IA.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, December 7, 2012, at St. Benedict Catholic Church, 307 West Main Street, Decorah, IA, with Rev. Phillip Gibbs presiding. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call from 3:00-7:00 p.m., on Thursday, December 6, 2012, and also from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., Friday morning at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, 604 South Avenue, Decorah, IA. There will be a rosary at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday.

Darlyne Joan (Rilling) Hackman was born on July 11, 1931, the daughter of Chris and Rose (Kafka) Rilling in Fort Atkinson, Iowa. Darlyne attended St. John’s Catholic School in Fort Atkinson, Iowa. Darlyne married Jerome Hackman on September 26, 1950, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Fort Atkinson, Iowa. Together they farmed between Fort Atkinson and St. Lucas for thirty years, retiring and moving to Decorah in 1980. Darlyne sold Avon products for over thirty years and also served as a hostess at the Decorah McDonald’s restaurant for over fifteen years. Darlyne enjoyed visiting and socializing with all people. She enjoyed traveling and organized many trips with the Scenic Hawkeye Stage Bus Line. Her greatest joy was selling Avon, baking, working in her yard and collecting yard ornaments. Above all, Darlyne loved and enjoyed her grandchildren. Darlyne was a member of St. Benedict Catholic Church and the Hawkeye CB Club. She was a sixty year member of the Foresters in St. Lucas, Iowa and a fifty year member of the Winneshiek County Farm Bureau.

Darlyne is survived by her three sons: Gary (Deborah) Hackman, Lee Allen Hackman, and Jerry Hackman, all of Decorah, IA. Seven grandchildren: Jennifer (Jason) Kleppe, Jill (Brock) Helgerson, Jacqueline (Brian) Lahey, Crystal (Jeremy) Soppe, William “Billy” (Megan) Hackman, Ryan Hackman and Andrew Hackman. One step-grandson: Nicholas (Nikki) England. Seven great grandchildren: Cole, Chase & Kaylee Kleppe; Josie, Lydia & Bria Helgerson; Nolan Lahey and another Lahey baby due in March 2013, as well as Billy and Megan Hackman’s baby due in 2013. Four sisters-in-law: Rose Rilling, Fort Atkinson, IA; Dorothy Bohach, Spillville, IA; Lorraine Hackman, New Hampton, IA; and Lavina Rilling, LaMesa, CA. One brother-in-law: Joe (Agnes) Hackman, Ft. Atkinson, IA, along with several nieces and nephews.

Darlyne was preceded in death by her parents: Chris and Rose (Kafka) Rilling. Her husband: Jerome Hackman on August 28, 2008. One daughter-in-law: Wanda Hackman in 1985. Three brothers: Dean Rilling, Glen (Rose) Rilling, and Merlin Rilling. One sister-in-law: Margaret (Felix) Wenthold. Six brothers-in-law: Alphonse (Betty) Hackman, Anselm (Lenora) Hackman, Leo (Rita) Hackman, Leo (Jeanette) Schmitt, Florian Hackman and William Bohach. Her father and mother-in-law: Joe and Theresa Hackman.
