Marvin Soukup Sr., age 85, of rural Spillville, IA, died suddenly Saturday, November 24, 2012 at his home.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, November 28, 2012 at the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville, IA with Rev. Donald Hawes presiding. Burial will be in the St. Wenceslaus Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3:00 – 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 27, 2012 at the Balik Funeral Home in Spillville, IA there will be a rosary at 4:00 and a scripture service at 7:00 there will also be visitation from 9:30 -10:30 Wednesday at the funeral home.

Marvin Joseph Soukup was born on July 22, 1927, the son of Carl and Regina (Woldan) Soukup, in rural Spillville, Iowa. Marvin attended country grade school and St. Wenceslaus Catholic School in Spillville. He married Marcella Phillips on October 24, 1949, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church. Farming was his lifelong ambition. Marvin measured land and served as an ASCS committeeman for twenty-eight years. He also was a Farm Bureau director. Marvin was a lifelong member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, where he served as Lector, Eucharistic minister, Parish Council and Holy Name officer. Marvin enjoyed reading, gardening, hunting, fishing, playing cards, bus trips, visiting his children, grandchildren and great great grandchildren. He also was an avid St. Louis Cardinal Baseball fan.

Marvin will be remembered by everyone for his compassionate dedicated love for his family. He always encouraged his family to reach for their full potential.

Marvin’s survivors include his loving wife of sixty-three years: Marcella Soukup, Spillville, IA. Three daughters: Connie Arens, Cedar Rapids, IA; Joni (John) Kubesh, Peosta, IA; and Janice (Russ) Turner, Oelwein, IA. Three sons: Marvin Jr. (Mary) Soukup, Calmar, IA; Dale (Deb) Soukup, Marion, IA; and Douglas (Betty) Soukup, Calmar, IA. Grandchildren: Scott (Angie) Pope, Penny (Greg) Mara, Heather (Tom) Barbee, Shelby (Brian) White, Heidi (Josh) Beals, Adam Hesse, Ben (Beth) Hesse, Ryan Soukup, Melody (Kirk) Ollendieck, Jenny (Jared) Zeutenhorst, Amy Soukup, Ashley Soukup, Melissa (Reid) Elsbernd, Michael Soukup, Kyle Soukup, Zach Soukup and sixteen great grandchildren, one great great grandchild and several nieces and nephews. One brother: James Soukup, Decorah, IA. One brother-in-law: Bernard (Lois) Phillips, Calmar, IA.

Marvin was preceded in death by his parents: Carl and Regina (Woldan) Soukup. Father and mother-in-law: Jerome and Julia (Frana) Phillips. One sister-in-law: Mary Soukup.
