Helen L. Strand, age 93 of Decorah, IA, died Tuesday morning, December 18, 2012 at Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, December 22, 2012 at Congregational United Church of Christ in Decorah with Rev. Marlea Gilbert officiating. Burial will be in Phelps Cemetery in Decorah.

Visitation begins on Saturday at 10:00 A.M., one hour before services, at the church. Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah is serving the family.

Helen Lucile (Bersie) Strand was born October 16, 1919 in Spring Grove, Minnesota, the daughter of Bennett and Bena (Selness) Bersie. She was baptized and confirmed at First Lutheran Church in Decorah, and graduated from Decorah High School with the class of 1938.

Helen’s first job out of high school was working for Walter M. Strand as a legal secretary in Decorah. She eventually became his wife. As a homemaker in Decorah and Ridgeway, they started their family and later moved to Kimball, South Dakota, where they lived until Walter’s death in 1976. Helen then moved to be with her sisters in Waterloo, Iowa and eventually settled back home in Decorah. Helen was a life-long member of the Congregational United Church of Christ in Decorah.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Walter, on December 29, 1976; her oldest son, Anthony, on June 2, 1981; two grandchildren: Pleshette Powell and Austin Morris Strand; five sisters: Bernice Benjamin, Marcella Pint, Gertrude Barge, Hattie Engen and LaVonne Jacobson; and one brother: Harlan Bersie.

Helen is survived by six children: Karleen (Steve) Maeck of Burr Oak, IA; Adrian Strand, Elona Strand and Heloise Poye of Decorah; Jonathan Strand of Burr Oak; and Wyatt (Beverly) Strand of Mitchell, SD; 15 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
