Adam Ludwig Bender, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Adam Bender of Hesper township, died at 9:40 Monday night, Aug. 26, at St. Mary’s hospital in Rochester, Minnesota. His immediate family was at his bed side when he passed away.
He complained of feeling ill last Friday, a doctor was called Saturday night, and he was taken to Rochester early Sunday morning. He had suffered severe pains in the back for several days. The pains became very intensive on Saturday. His illness baffled the doctors and a post mortem was conducted Monday to determine the cause of his death.
The post mortem revealed that death was caused by polio encephalitis.
The deceased was born April 15, 1909, in Hesper township, Winneshiek county, Iowa, and had spent his entire life in the farm home of his parents. He was respected and esteemed in a large circle of friends. His early education was acquired in the Hesper-Knoke school, and he was a member of St. John’s Lutheran church at Locust, where he was baptized and confirmed. He was unmarried.
Surviving are his parents, two brothers and two sisters. They are Bessie (Mrs. Frank Barth), Hesper township; Virgil Bender, Hesper; Myrtle (Mrs. Raymond Barth), Mabel, Minn., and Walter Bender at home.
Funeral director Carl L. Rostad of the Winneshiek Burial association brought the remains to the funeral home in Decorah Wednesday afternoon.
Private funeral services for the family will be held at one o’clock from the Winneshiek Burial Association funeral home, with Rev. Carl Losen, pastor of St. John’s Lutheran church at Locust, officiating, and further services will be held at the grave in Locust cemetery by Rev. Losen at 2:30 o’clock.
The pallbearers are Vernie Johnson, Ernie Knoke, Ervin Peterson, Earl Foltz, Vern Bender, Leonard Barth, Nordine Danielson and Lester Young.
