Vernon J. Bender, 88, of Decorah, died April 5 at the Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital in Decorah.
Funeral services were held April 8 at 2 p.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church at Locust, with Pastor Gerhard Brase officiating. Music was provided by Connie Bolson and the congregation. Hymns were “How Great Thou Art”, “Amazing Grace”, and “In the Garden.”
Fjelstul Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements, with the following as pallbearers: Virgil Bender, Walter Bender, Raymond Bucknell, Norman Fischer, Ricky Hageman and Curtis Thompson. Burial was at the church cemetery.
He was born April 14, 1900, in Hesper Township, the son of Peter and Bertha (Dehning) Bender. He attended rural schools of Winneshiek County, and married Sophia V. Novak May 27, 1952,at Caledonia, Minn. He had farmed in the Hesper Township area all his life. He was a member of the Lutheran Church.
His father and mother came from Dorchester and settled on the home farm in the late 1800’s. His father died in 1908.
Survivors include his wife, Sophia; one daughter, Carol Nicol and her husband Bob of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada; one sister, Ann Nesvik of Cresco; and a half-brother, Arlin Falck of Decorah. Preceding him in death were his parents, two sisters (Pearl Roney and Marjorie Weber), and a half-brother (Alvin Falck).
