Lester Bentley
Lester Bentley, 85, of rural Decorah, died Sunday, Nov. 13, 2011, at Wellington Place Care Center in Decorah. Funeral services are Saturday, Nov. 19, at 11 a.m. at Big Canoe Lutheran Church in rural Decorah, with Pastor David Andreae officiating. Burial is in the Big Canoe Lutheran Cemetery. Friends may call Friday from 4-6 p.m. at Roble Funeral home in Spring Grove, and one hour prior to services at the Church Saturday.
He was born Aug. 27, 1926, and lived on the family farm in Highland Township. He is the son of Henry W. and Irene (Grindland) Bentley. Lester was baptized Sept. 19. 1926, confirmed Nov. 10, 1940, and a lifelong member of Big Canoe Lutheran Church.
He married Genevieve I. (Sylling) June 7, 1944.
Lester was a farmer and founder and president of B&B Auction Service. He was an auctioneer for over 50 years and continued to love to go to auctions as well as play cards, listen to old-time music and visit with family and friends. He served the community as a member of Church council, ASCS Board, election board and other charitable organizations.
Survivors include wife, Genevieve, of 67 years; sons, Larry (Susan) Bentley of Corona, Calif.; Roger (Linda) Bentley of Roseville, Minn.; Richard (Donna) Bentley of Aberdeen, S.D.; and daughter, Lois (Gregg) Shattuck of New Hampton; 11 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents and one infant son.
