Sylvester Moellers

Sylvester Peter Moellers, 88, of Ossian, died Monday, Dec. 12, 2011, at the Good Samaritan Center in West Union. Visitation was Thursday, Dec. 15, from 4-7:30 p.m. at the Schmitz-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Ossian, and one hour before services at the church. The Knights of Columbus led the rosary at 6:30 p.m., followed by a scripture service at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial was Friday, Dec. 16, at 11 a.m. at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Ossian. Monsignor Cletus Hawes was celebrant. Burial followed in the St. Francis de Sales Catholic Cemetery in Ossian. Condolences may be left with www.schmitzfuneralhome.com . Schmitz-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Ossian was in charge of arrangements.

Sylvester was born March 29, 1923, on the family farm south of Ossian, to Frank and Christina (Timp) Moellers. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church where he was a lifelong member. He attended St. Francis de Sales Catholic School.

Sylvester was united in marriage to Virginia Jane Nienhaus April 23, 1946, at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Festina. Two daughters were born to this union. Sylvester was a lifelong farmer on the family farm south of Ossian. He retired from farming in 1976 and later moved into an apartment in Ossian in November of 2006. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Rosary Society, Silver Springs Golf and Country Club, Union Produce Co-op and Winneshiek Co. Farm Bureau. He enjoyed golfing, playing cards, building and flying remote control airplanes. He enjoyed spending time with his family and especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include his two daughters, Mary Jane (Norman) Phelps, San Francisco, Calif., Nancy (Greg) Stahl, West Union; two grandchildren, Cassie Mittelstadt, West Union, Erica Stahl, Chicago, Ill.; two great-grandchildren, Tucker Mittelstadt, West Union, Addison Mittlestadt, West Union; two sisters, Imogene (Roy) Macal, Decorah, Elberta (Dennis) Huinker, Calmar; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Sylvester was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Virginia Moellers, Oct. 7, 2001; and his sister, Malinda Moellers.
