John Blauer

John A. Blauer, 65, of La Vista, Neb., formerly Decorah, died Monday Aug. 15, 2011. John died in his sons’ home in Kenyon, Minn., surrounded by loved ones. A gathering to celebrate John’s life is Saturday, Aug. 27, from 3-8 p.m., at The Stone Hearth Inn in Decorah. John fought a courageous 16-month battle with cancer; and to help others learn and fight cancer, John donated his body to science. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to the American Cancer Society.

He was born March 5, 1946 in Tingley. John graduated from Onamia Minnesota High School in 1964 and received a B. A. in history from Luther College in Decorah in 1968. He married his college sweetheart, Cindy Hinz, Dec. 28, 1968. They lived together in Decorah before relocating to La Vista, Neb. in 2005.

John worked at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Nebraska until his death. He previously managed the Decorah Lumber Yard from 1969-1986 and owned Discount Liquor of Decorah from 1989-2005. While residing in Decorah, he was treasurer and president of the Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Elks club and Silver Crest Country Club.

He was a man who lived to work. When not working, John loved to fish, play cards and spend time with family and friends.

John is survived by his wife, Cindy, of 42.5 years and his children, Richard (Jessica) of Kenyon; Jory (Mea), of Chicago; Stephanie (Chris) Fitzgerald, of Vero Beach; Galen (Shannon) Crozier, of Holmestead. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, brother Larry (Sherry) and mother-in-law Barbara Hinz.
