James George Burgess

James George Burgess, son of Thomas and Cathern Burgess, was born at Bluffton, Iowa, April 7, 1872, and after a brief illness of flu-pneumonia, passed away at his home in Orleans township, Winneshiek county, Tuesday afternoon, Feb 9, 1937, age 64 years, 9 months and 22 days.

On Nov. 24, 1897, he was united in marriage with Emma Jane Greenslade at Bluffton. To their union ten children were born, three of whom died in infancy.

In the year 1900, Mr. Burgess purchased a farm four miles east of Cresco in Orleans township where for 37 years he has made his home. He not only was a successful farmer but had exceptionally good judgment and many neighbors sought him as a wise counselor to whom they might go for advice. In addition to this, Mr. Burgess did so well at the job of living life that he was widely and highly respected as a man.

He won for himself a great deal of credit as father, neighbor, friend and citizen. His place in the community was such that he will be greatly missed, not only by his close relatives and friends but by a much wider circle of his fellow men.

He is survived by his wife, one brother Charles of Burr Oak and seven children: Vera (Mrs. John Walton); Charles, Ellen, (Mrs. Thos. Daly), John, Clifford and James, all of Cresco; Cathern, (Mrs. Maurice Williams), Wykoff, Minn., and fifteen grandchildren. Besides these there are many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at the home Thursday afternoon, February 11, the Rev. W. H. Mitchell, pastor of the Cresco Methodist church, officiating. Burial was at Bluffton.

Pallbearers were Leonard Steinmetz, Roland Burr, Charles Ernst, John Emslie, John McGourty and R. M. Terry.
