Olaf Benson

Olaf Benson was born in Winneshiek county, Sept. 27, 1894. He was a son of George T. Benson and wife Inga, nee Iverson. There were seven children.

Mr. Benson died suddenly at his home southwest of Cresco Tuesday, Sept. 26, the day before his birthday. He was preceded in death by his mother and one brother, Chas. Tony. He is survived by his wife and 85 year old invalid father, four sisters and one brother: Marie, Mrs. Ed Gerber, Cresco; Alma, Mrs. Helmer Gunhus, Ridgeway; Gladys Bertina, Mrs. Rudolph Hovey, Ridgeway; Evelyn, Mrs. Arthur Gunhus of Orleans; Selmer Leon, Orleans.

Olaf was baptized Oct. 28, 1894, by Rev. Moses and confirmed by Rev. Lauritz Larsen in the class of 1914.

On Feb. 16, 1922, he was married to Miss Tomena Johnson of Ridgeway by the Rev. D. C. Jordahl at the parsonage in Ridgeway. They lived 9 years east of Cresco and 8 years ago bought the DeGrote farm where they since have had their home.

The funeral was held at the Bradley funeral home and the Cresco First Lutheran church Friday afternoon, September 29. It was very largely attended by members of his large family and many friends. Rev. H. M. Normann, his pastor, had charge. He spoke on “The Mystery of Salvation” at the funeral home and on “The Necessity of Salvation” at the church. There was special music by Mandius Olson who sang, “I’m but a Stranger Here,” and “Resting, Sweetly Resting.” He was accompanied by Mrs. H. M. Normann.

Burial was in the Lincoln church cemetery south of Ridgeway.

There were many flowers and other memorial bouquets. Twenty-six to Luther College radio station; two to missions; twelve to orphans home and ten to old people’s homes.

Olaf Benson was a reliable, kind hearted Christian and steady church member. He could be relied upon to do whatever he promised. God give us more people like him.
