Services held for Irene Sobolik, 77

Funeral services for Irene Sobolik of Grass Valley, CA, were held at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Grass Valley, CA, followed by a memorial and eulogy service at the Hooper and Weaver Mortuary chapel in Grass Valley, with interment in Sierra Memorial Lawn in Nevada City, CA. Pastor Andy Owens officiated.

Irene, 77, died Monday, July 27, 1998 at the U.C. Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, CA.

Irene was born February 18, 1921 in Ridgeway to Laurence and Aletta (Linde) Hove. She graduated from Calmar High School, then earned a degree in education from Luther College in Decorah in 1940.

She had her own radio show and taught school at the country school in Vernon for two years after graduation from college. She worked as a church organist and piano teacher for 25 years. She sang in choir and composed music. She was president of Alta Publishers.

Irene was a member of the Nevada County Duplicate Bridge Club and the Alta Sierra Women’s Golf Club. She had recently completed a book and had written numerous letters to the editor of The Union.

Irene Hove married John Sobolik on Janurary 30, 1943 in Glendale, CA.

Survivors include her husband, John; two sons, Mark Sobolik of Cupertino, CA and Michael Sobolik of Anchorage, AK; one daughter, Jean Sobolik of Fairbanks, AK; one brother, Marion Hove of Cresco; and seven grandchildren.

Irene was preceded in death by her parents.
