Leonard Schmitt services held

Funeral services for Leonard Schmitt of rural Fort Atkinson were held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday,, November 10 at St. John’s Catholic Church with interment in St. John’s Catholic Cemetery, both in Fort Atkinson. Rev. John Moser officiated. Pallbearers were: Ronald Schmitt, Darrel Elsbernd, Kenneth Schmitt, Alan Elsbernd, Thomas Kuennen, and Roger Uhlenhake. Chekal Chapel, Schluter-Balik Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Leonard, 80, died Sunday, November 4, 2001 at his home of an apparent heart attack.

Leonard Theodore Schmitt was born February 2, 1921 on the family farm near Fort Atkinson, the son of Frank X. and Anna (Hackman) Schmitt. He attended St. John’s Catholic School in Fort Atkinson. He farmed southwest of Fort Atkinson with his parents and brother.

He enjoyed farm life and had livestock until this past summer. He also enjoyed music.

He was a member of the Catholic Order of the Foresters and was a life-long member of St. John’s Catholic Church.

He is survived by three sisters: Mildred Uhlenhake of Ossian, Luella Elsbernd of Spillville, and Elaine Kuennen of Ossian; and two brothers: Clarence of Waukee and Elmer of Fort Atkinson.

Leonard was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother: Francis in infancy.

FORT ATKINSON - Leonard T. Schmitt, 80, rural Fort Atkinson, died at His home of an apparent heart attack on Nov. 4, 2001.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. John's Catholic Church, Fort Atkinson at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Nov. l0 with Rev. John Moser presiding. Rita Schmitt was organist, accompanying the St. John's Choir. Hymn selections included "Sing With All the Saints and Glory", "Blest Are They" and "How Great Thou Art . Lectors were Susan Kuennen and Debra Beckman and gift bearers were Mildred Uhlenhake, Luella Elsbernd and Elaine Kuennen.
Interment was in St. John's Catholic Cemetery, Fort Atkinson with Ronald Schmitt, Darrel Elsbernd, Kenneth Schmitt, Alan Elsbernd, Thomas Kuennen and Roger Uhlenhake serving as casket bearers.

Survivors include three sisters: Mildred (Cletus) Uhlenhake, Ossian, Luella (Jerome) Elsbernd, Spillville and Elaine Kuennen, Ossian; two brothers, Clarence (Evelyn) Schmitt, Waukee and Elmer (Dorothy) Schmitt, Fort Atkinson; 28 nieces and nephews; 59 great-nieces and nephews; two great-great nieces and numerous cousins.
Preceding him in death were his parents; one brother, Francis Schmitt in infancy; one niece, Jean Ann Uhlenhake and one nephew, Kevin Kuennen.
Arrangements were made by Chekal Chapel, Schluter-Balik Funeral Home, Fort Atkinson.
