Services held for George Leistikow

Funeral services were held for George Leistikow on Wednesday, September 3, at Burr Oak Lutheran Church at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Hans Floan officiating. Interment was held in Burr Oak Cemetery. Pallbearers were his grandchildren. Fjelstul Funeral Home of Decorah handled the arrangements.

George Louis Carl Leistikow of Burr Oak, age 89, died August 31, 1997 at his home.

George was born April 15, 1908 near Donnan in Fayette County, the son of Herman and Ida (Warnke) Leistikow. In 1920, at the age of 11, he moved to Winneshiek County. On May 20, 1923 George was confirmed at St. Paul German Evangelical Church in Burr Oak by the Rev. Christian Pieper. He received his education in Fayette and Winneshiek County rural schools.

On February 17, 1933, George married Minnie Nelson at the Lutheran Parsonage in Harmony, MN by Pastor O.C. Brenna. He continued farming until his retirement in 1973.

George was a charter member of Burr Oak Lutheran Church. He held various offices and served on many committees. He was a member of Building Committee when the church building was doubled in size. George was also a long time member of the Board of Hesper School District #4, a Farm Bureau member, Heartwood Club, Winn. County Memorial Hospital, and a 4-H Leader for many years. In 1991, he was honored for volunteer work by State of Iowa.

Survivors include his wife; six children: Donald of Decorah, Joanne Engebretson of Edina, MN, Norman of Bloomington, MN, Carole Evenrud of Minneapolis, MN, Mary Casterton of Decorah, and Doris Patterson of Decorah; one brother, Carl of Decorah; one sister, Helen Fravel of Preston, MN; 15 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren.

George was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: Frederick, Herman and Ervin; one sister, Amelia Smith; one grandson; and one great-granddaughter.
