Services held for Arlene Franzen

Funeral services for Arlene Franzen of Lawler will be held at 10:30 a.m. today, Wednesday, November 5 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Lawler with Rev. Marvin Salz officiating. The pall will be placed on the casket by her six daughters. Interment will be in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Lawler. Pallbearers are grandsons: Jason Byrne, Steve Wilkes, Neil Franzen, Ryan Byrne, Erik Elin, Derek Dowd, Tony Franzen, and Adam Best. Honorary pallbearers are granddaughters: Michele Mikkelsen, Autumn Elin, Melissa Franzen, Megan Franzen, Katelyn Franzen, Stacy Byrne, Allie Franzen, Katie Franzen, Bridget McDermott, Courtney Franzen, Becca Franzen, Amy Best, Amanda Best, and Lindsey Dowd. Hugeback Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Arlene, 71, died Saturday, November 1, 2003 at her rural Lawler home of cancer.

Arlene L. Franzen was born March 15, 1932 on the Hageman family farm in rural Winneshiek County, near Festina, the daughter of Edmund and Mary (Jacobs) Hageman. Arlene attended St. Mary’s School in Festina. Prior to her marriage, she worked at Loras College and Mercy Hospital, both in Dubuque.

On October 5, 1949 she married Louis Franzen at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Festina. They made their home west of Lawler where they dairy farmed.

Arelene {sec} was an active member of the Catholic Daughters of the America’s and the Rosary Society at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church.

She is survived by her husband Louis; six daughters: Charlet Wilkes of Decorah, Bonnie Kutz of Waterloo, Janice Byrne of Lawler, Cheryl Garlick of Mankato, MN, Barbara Best of Waucoma, and Bev Dowd of New Hampton; three sons: Allan of Fredericksburg, Randy of Lawler, and Leon of Fredericksburg; 22 grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; two sisters: Alma Bauer of New Hampton and Alice Lensing of Ft. Atkinson; and one brother: Henry of Calmar.

Arlene was preceded in death by her parents; one sister: Norma Jean Hageman; and one brother: Alex.
