Services held for Roscoe Dawley

Funeral services for Roscoe Dawley of Bluffton were held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, December 4 at Assembly of God Church in Cresco with Rev. George John officiating. Interment was in Burr Oak Cemetery in Burr Oak. Honorary pallbearers were his 33 grandchildren and 40 great-grandchildren. Pallbearers were: Adam Dawley, Andy Dawley, Joey Dawley, Randy Dawley, Shawn Dawley, and Michael Newman. Fjelstul Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Roscoe, 91, died Monday, December 1, 2003 at Oneota Riverview Care Facility of natural causes.

Roscoe Herbert Dawley was born July 2, 1912 in the family’s log home near Bluffton in Burr Oak Township, Winneshiek County, the son of Charley and Cordelia (Crane) Dawley. He attended rural schools.

On December 2, 1941 he married Ellen A. Gabrielson at the Lutheran Parsonage in Spring Valley, MN. They farmed near Bluffon {sic} on his and his brother, Tom’s farm. From there they moved across the river to the Halse farm. They moved up north of Mabel and farmed for a few years. They bought a farm in the Canoe Township area where they lived a few years. They moved to Bluffton where Ellen still resides.

Roscoe belonged to the Assembly of God Church. In January of 2000 he moved to Oneota Riverview Care Facility in Freeport.

He is survived by his wife Ellen of Bluffton; 12 children: Ruth Brownfield of Colorado Springs, CO, Martha Akemann of McIntire, James of Boscobel, WI, Mary Gridley of Rockford, IL, Ron of Belvidere, IL, Becky Newman of Cedar Falls, Mark of Bluffton, Steve of Ridgeway, Dan of Burr Oak, Mike of Bluffton, Jeff of Bluffton, and John of Cresco; 33 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; and two sisters: Lottie Good of Ridgeway and Vyra Masters of Canton, MN.

Roscoe was preceded in death by one son: Lester in infancy; two great-grandchildren; his parents; seven brothers: Edwin, Clarence, Harry, Jesse, Clifford, Thomas, and John; and two sisters: Mabel Brandt and Grace Morgan.
